Q & A

I love to see a gorgeous head of hair. I love it even more if that hair is on one of my client's heads. My number one concern is making sure your hair is healthy. That is above what color it is or how curly or straight it is. What's the point of having a great color but having the texture feel like straw. I work with my clients to figure out what their goals are for their hair. If you come to me and your hair is not in very good shape, I will first give you the right cut for your hair and lifestyle. While you are in my chair I will also teach you how to care for and style your hair at home. I will recommend what products to use to make your hair strong and healthy. I will teach you the techniques you'll need to style your hair every day. What good is a great cut if you can't achieve the look at home.

I am a certified Master Colorist with the American Board of Certified Haircolorists. I love hair color. The right color can really give you a lift and brighten your face. But let me repeat, the right color. The tone must compliment your face. I have seen so many people who just want to be blond no matter what it looks like on them. There are many different shades and levels of blond so even if Barbie doll blond doesn't look good on you, maybe a slightly darker, honey golden blond will be beautiful. Let me say, if your hair is black or dark brown, chances are pretty high that blond is not the right color for you. Unless, of coarse, you are looking for a funky look. In that case, as long as you have a short, funky cut, it can be quite striking. Taking long, dark hair and making it blond just doesn't work. As I said in the beginning, I want your hair to be healthy. It's impossible to take hair down that many shades and have it stay healthy. If it's short, then it is cut off pretty quickly. There are so many beautiful shades of brown and red that, working together, we can find the one for you.

When choosing a color, I like to choose something that could have conceivably happened in nature. Highlights should look like you spent a month in the Caribbean, not like you spent a few hours in my chair. It should not be obvious to everyone on the street that your hair is colored. Take Gillian Anderson of the X-Files for instance. Is her hair colored? Probably. Humm....could be natural....not sure...either way it looks great. (by the way I , as a hairdresser am pretty sure Ms. Anderson's hair is colored. Don't expect to fool a stylist with your color, just regular people who don't know you.)

When doing men's hair I like to take what they have and make it great. I see so many men with the wrong cut. A lot of them think that because there hair is short they can get just as good a cut from a barber or a low end chain. Many of my male clients first come to me because their wives or girlfriends dragged them in to have me fix their hair. Most of them see what a difference it makes and never go back to their old ways.

I like to have a professional and friendly relationship with my clients. I treat them with respect and consideration. I try not to run late. If, for some reason, I am running very late (more than 20 minutes) I have my clients called so they don't rush to get to the salon and then sit for an hour. I expect the same consideration from my clients. If they are running late or have to cancel I expect to be called as soon as possible. If both stylist and client have this respect for each other everybody comes out ahead.

I hope this has helped you see a little of who I am and how I work. If you would like to make an appointment please go to the contact page.

Thank you,

Mary Reid-Cowing
